Super skippers

Skipping is one of those skills that, once you have it, you need to continue to practise and maintain a base level of fitness.

Skipping is a simple yet effective cardiovascular exercise that elevates your heart rate. Getting your heart rate to beat faster trains your body to move oxygen and blood to your muscles more efficiently.

I like being outside in the fresh air, it makes my heart rate go high which makes me feel happy because I am becoming fitter.

A full-body workout—yes, skipping—uses multiple muscle groups, including legs, arms, and shoulders. Skipping 5 minutes can feel like we have run a marathon.

Skipping makes me feel happy because it gets me fit and burns energy.

When the skipping started many students could hardly skip.  Some could skip. Just  not repeatedly and only a couple  knew one or two advanced skills or tricks. Now everyone in the class can skip using the rope and can successfully complete at least one skill or trick.

I have gotten a lot better at skipping from practising a lot. I have learnt skills like leg wraps. I feel confident to skip now.

I found skipping hard at the start because I didn’t know how to jump and time the rope. I feel good about skipping because I know when to jump. I can even do double under repeatedly now. I like to practise skipping in my own time now with my friends. We have competitions like the last one to stop skipping.

Thanks to Geraldo Alken and Sacha Skips featuring Luke Boon from Australia, Room 4 has been able to learn some new skipping techniques. We are focussing on the fundamental skills. This may mean that we need to work on the footwork and jumps without skipping rope first to get it. With each practice session, these techniques are becoming increasingly noticeable. The teamwork and watching each other for feedback when trying new skills are thrilling to see. Giving each other constructive feedback on what areas need improvement for them to successfully complete the skill.

I have learnt how to do the body wrap around my leg and change direction with my rope when skipping. I got to try double dutch in front of the whole school with Sacha and Luke. I like learning new tricks and trying new things. I even jump at morning tea and lunchtime.

The skills Room 4 has learned are the side shuffle, the boxer jump, double unders, and the side swing. The more we practise these skills, the easier they become and the more repetitions we can complete at once. We cannot wait to show off all the skills and tricks we have learned at the Jumping June celebration on June 27, 2024.

I have learnt how to do a cartwheel when skipping, I kept trying until I could do it.

The reason why I know how to skip it is because I go to boxing. I can teach others in my class my skills. I am a pro at double unders and fast feet. Tip to doing double unders is to jump higher and spin the rope faster.

l like skipping in the morning it gets my heart rate up all the time. It's so fun!! I have learnt how to skip. Before I started I could not skip at all. I can now do an arm warp and a leg warp. I personally feel proud of achieving this and being provided the opportunity in Room 4.

Sacha and Luke were great influencers teaching us new moves like the leg wrap and the arm wrap. These skills I have out into a jump routine that I will show at Jumping June.
