Students used balanced scales to weigh objects by balancing them with the same weights. The purpose was to compare the weights of the objects to work out which side was heavier or lighter and how to make the scale the same weight on both sides.
By working in small groups everyone had to problem solve, listen to their group members and trial different possibilities.
After understanding how the balance scale worked, Room 14 created their own balance scale using a coat hanger, some yarn and two cups. Students explored and experimented with a range of weights. They made observations about how well their balance worked. They shared ways to improve their balance scales.
