Bears In The Night

A good way to explore prepositions is to read the now out of print book Bears In the Night by Stan and Jan Berenstain.

The story is about little bears sneaking out of their house at night only to rush back when they encounter a hooting animal on Spook Hill. Their adventures take them in, out, over, under, around, between, through and up.

After listening to the story, our first activity was to sequence the order of events using picture cards. Retelling the story was accomplished in short order, as the book is written using lots of clever repetition in very few words.

The next step was to create the journey the bears took using items we had in the classroom and hall. After having an initial run through, we debugged problems that were encountered, like the wall being too close to the bridge and the rocks being too close together. From input by all members of the class we were able to sort the issues and our debugging was very successful.

Our class invited students from Room 5 to share in the fun. Room 13 narrated the story while our guests navigated their way around the circuit using the story as a guide.

I liked the bridge because I like going under things..

It was fun. The chairs were too close together and I kept banging into them. The rest was good, so good.

I liked it. I want to do it again.

I have been working at Wairakei Primary School since 2014 and I am teaching in the junior school.
